Although essentially caused by bacteria, the direct cause of this disease is really a toxin that the bacteria release in the body. Scarlet fever typically causes a sore throat, fever, and a rash, and although the tongue does not usually swell, it develops a bright red appearance in the initial stages of the disease. Scarlet fever is often treated symptomatically, so measures such as salt water gargling are sometimes enough, but in a number of cases, antibiotics may be needed. It is unlikely that you have scarlet fever, but if your symptoms do not disappear within the next three days, you should consult a doctor.
